EMR Function Checklist
Below is a list of functions that electronic medical record (EMR) systems
should have to be fully operational in a health information network. The list
was included in a study in Florida published in the Journal of Medical Quality
and was derived from a 2003 report by the Institute of Medicine (see

- Medication list
- Diagnosis
- Allergies
- Problem list
- Procedures
- Patient scheduling
- Electronically available lab data/results
- Electronic prescribing of medications
- Electronically available X-ray results
- Electronic order entry (i.e., labs, X-rays)
- Patient-education materials
- Off-site access/log-in capability
- Access to reference material
- Electronic connection to pharmacy info
- Coding advice to physicians
- Preventive-service reminders
- Growth charting
- Weight-based dosing calculations
- Clinical decision support
- Advance directives
- Auto-updated insurance coverage data
