Institute on Psychiatric Services Calls for Resident Research

Psychiatry residents will have a valuable opportunity in October to present posters and participate in resident-focused activities at APA's Institute on Psychiatric Services.

APA's 2008 Institute on Psychiatric Services (IPS), which will be held in Chicago from October 2 to 5, encourages all psychiatry residents with research projects or reports on scholarly activities to participate in this year's IPS with a poster submission.

The IPS offers a great opportunity for residents working on research projects to present their findings at a national meeting. Poster submissions on all areas of psychiatric research are welcome.

In the past, approximately 90 percent of all resident poster submissions have been accepted for presentation. Training departments often pay for registration and/or travel for residents who present posters.

The IPS provides an excellent opportunity for residents to learn about innovative work in psychiatry from around the country and around the world. The conference offers a unique opportunity to meet with resident colleagues, as well as with experts and leaders in the field. There are a number of activities specifically geared toward resident physicians, including a reception for residents, program sessions discussing career options, mentoring opportunities, and a "Meet the Experts" luncheon during which residents can meet with leaders in psychiatric subspecialties including disaster psychiatry, child psychiatry, and community psychiatry. There will also be a full-day session on working with homeless mentally ill individuals, which has been very well received by residents in the past.
