APA, ABPN, and CME
When APA members receive letters notifying them of successful completion of
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) exams, some may contact APA
with questions about how to obtain CME credit, or a CME certificate, for their
achievement.
APA is not a recognized sponsor for the ABPN certification exam and
therefore cannot directly provide CME credit for successful completion of the
exam (parts I and II) or the recertification exam (part II of the Maintenance
of Certification exam).
However, because APA recognizes the time and preparation for both exams and
the learning obtained in the process, APA members can submit their ABPN
notification of successful completion of an exam as part of their APA CME
Compliance Report.
The CME requirement for APA members is 150 hours of CME credit every three
years, with at least 60 hours of the AMA Physician's Recognition Award (PRA)
Category 1 credits. A CME Certificate of Compliance is provided when APA
receives a member's report.
When reporting CME activities to APA, a member may claim 25 AMA PRA
Category 1 credits for successful completion of Part I and 25 credits for the
successful completion of Part II of the certification exams of the ABPN and
the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Members may also claim
25 hours for successful completion of the ABPN recertification exam.
In addition, they may report 25 AMA PRA Category 1 credits for successful
completion of ABPN certifying examinations in addiction psychiatry,
administrative psychiatry, child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic
psychiatry, and pain management and psychosomatic psychiatry.
Another option for APA members who seek recognition for CME hours is
receipt of a "To Whom It May Concern" letter from APA's Department
of CME. Upon receipt of the member's notification from ABPN, the office will
provide a letter outlining APA recognition of the activity as part of its CME
reporting.
If neither of those options meets a psychiatrist's professional needs, he
or she can apply to the AMA for a CME Certificate of Credit for a fee. AMA
members also pay a fee, depending on the type of certificate.
