Hammersley Remembered
James Alan Margolis, M.D.
Sacramento, Calif.
I read with sadness the passing of Dr. Don Hammersley, and I wanted
to add my praise (Psychiatric News, September 7, 2007).
As a young psychiatrist, I became active nationally as a district branch
president and a member of the Private Practice Committee and APA CHAMPUS Task
Force. Don often served as the facilitator or resource person for these
meetings. These meetings brought me to Washington, D.C., a few times a year.
Each time, Don would greet me as a valued and important person even though I
was just one of 10 or 100 attending a meeting or conference.
Twenty years ago, my middle son and I made a pilgrimage to the East Coast.
One of the highlights was when we came to Washington, D.C., and Don took my
son, David, on a personal tour of APA. David was very impressed with this, and
Don's special interest and care helped make up for the many days I missed with
the family to do APA activities. I always looked forward to seeing Don when I
went to Washington.
