Congressman Tells Psychiatrists: Get Involved

In his address to the Assembly last month, Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) made an impassioned plea for psychiatrists to increase the chances that their concerns will be heard on Capitol Hill by getting to know their federal legislators so they can educate them on pressing issues facing psychiatrists and their patients. One step that is crucial to building such a relationship, he stated, is to donate to APA's political action committee.

"Elections have consequences," he stressed. "You have to be involved if you want to have a say in where the nation is going." You don't get mental health parity passed, for example, "by just taking a stand—you do it by convincing your congressman that it should be passed" and explaining the reasons why it's important for voters in his or her district.
