The American Psychiatric Foundation (APF) has announced that its Board of Directors has elected Richard Harding, M.D., the next president of APF effective in 2008. Harding's numerous professional contributions to the governance of the foundation and APA have extended over more than a decade. He has served as president and vice president of APA and speaker of the APA Assembly. He was a member of the President's National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics and chaired the committee's Subcommittee on Privacy. The committee, appointed by the president, advises the secretary of Health and Human Services on public health and medical privacy issues.

"It is with great pleasure that I announce Dr. Harding's election as the next president of the American Psychiatric Foundation. He is effective and well liked by the Association, foundation, and staff," said Altha Stewart, M.D., the current president of the foundation. "He epitomizes the organization's commitment to excellent care for patients and continuous progress within the profession."

"I am delighted to have such an outstanding leader to succeed Dr. Stewart, who has been a spectacular leader of the foundation," said APA President Carolyn Robinowitz, M.D. "Dr. Harding is an energetic and thoughtful leader, and I know we will work well together for the benefit of APA and our patients."

The APF is a charitable and educational subsidiary of APA. The mission of the foundation is to advance understanding that mental illnesses are real and can be effectively treated.
