Harding Elected APF President
The American Psychiatric
Foundation (APF) has announced that its Board of Directors has elected Richard
Harding, M.D., the next president of APF effective in 2008. Harding is the
University of South Carolina's Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science
Department chair and a professor of clinical neuropsychiatry.
Harding's numerous professional contributions to the governance of the
foundation and APA have extended over more than a decade. He has served as
president and vice president of APA and speaker of the APA Assembly. He was a
member of the President's National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics
and chaired the committee's Subcommittee on Privacy. The committee, appointed
by the president, advises the secretary of Health and Human Services on public
health and medical privacy issues.
"It is with great pleasure that I announce Dr. Harding's election as
the next president of the American Psychiatric Foundation. He is effective and
well liked by the Association, foundation, and staff," said Altha
Stewart, M.D., the current president of the foundation. "He epitomizes
the organization's commitment to excellent care for patients and continuous
progress within the profession."
"I am delighted to have such an outstanding leader to succeed Dr.
Stewart, who has been a spectacular leader of the foundation," said APA
President Carolyn Robinowitz, M.D. "Dr. Harding is an energetic and
thoughtful leader, and I know we will work well together for the benefit of
APA and our patients."
The APF is a charitable and educational subsidiary of APA. The mission of
the foundation is to advance understanding that mental illnesses are real and
can be effectively treated.
