Education & Training

Taking Initiative

Ten psychiatry residents are chosen each year for the APA/GlaxoSmithKline Fellowship, which is intended to prepare future leaders in psychiatry. The 2003-2004 fellows were concerned that psychiatry was changing rapidly and needed a more thorough understanding of the place of the neurosciences, said APA's Marla Mitnick, staff coordinator of the fellowship.

"The residents have a keen sense of where the gaps are between education and medical practice," said Mitnick in an interview. "They want to push to the surface changes that will make them better physicians and influence the careers of people following them."
