Outstanding Resident Educators Honored by New Award

APA's Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning announced the recipients of the first Irma Bland Awards for Excellence in Teaching Residents. This award recognizes APA members who have made outstanding and sustaining contributions to resident education in psychiatry.

Bland, who died in 2003, was a nationally recognized psychiatric educator, clinician, and administrator. She taught psychoanalytic psychotherapy to residents and ran psychodynamically oriented clinics at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans from 1987 to 1995. In 1995 she became the medical director of Louisiana's Office of Mental Health in the metropolitan New Orleans area but continued teaching. At the time of her death, she was the regional administrator/CEO for Region One of the Louisiana Office of Mental Health.

The recipients of this award and the 2005 Nancy C.A. Roeske Award will be honored at a luncheon at APA's 2005 annual meeting in Atlanta.
