Same-Sex Civil Marriage

F. Gregory Noveske, M.D.

Westlake, Ohio

To the extent that APA continues to support culturally driven issues that lack the weight of scientific study, it risks losing its voice on its primary mission, that of protecting the mental health of the American people. Recently, the Assembly and Board put aside centuries of precedent by a vote purporting that same-sex marriages are healthy and good. APA has made an unholy alliance with a few of its politically driven subcommittees. When APA leaves its scientific and professional moorings and sails away into left-wing politics, the American people will trivialize its voice on issues that truly affect their mental health. Too bad that APA cannot take a pill for common sense.
