Same-Sex Civil Marriage

Ali Keskiner, M.D.

Clearwater, Fla.

The Assembly's backing of "gay marriage," which was reported in the June 17 issue, is showing once again APA's tendency to meddle in the sociopolitical arena. When will we learn to remain a scientific and medical professional organization like other medical societies and stay away from divisive and political issues? Don't we have enough problems with our medical identity and loss of leadership in helping individuals with mental illness?

I have nothing against how individuals conduct their private lives, but I do not like one self-serving group imposing its will on the whole organization. It seems that the Assembly is once again being pushed around.
