Queens District Branch Honors Resident Researchers

Residents who are members of the Queens Psychiatric Society recently had an opportunity to share their research with their psychiatrist colleagues as the district branch held its first annual Residents Scientific Paper Contest.

From left to right: Richard Deucher, M.D., Ramaswamy Viswanathan, M.D., Barry Perlman, M.D., Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D., Javaid Rashid, M.D., Kathija N. Paperwalla, M.D., Omer Stupac, M.D. (in back), Marie Pierre-Louis, M.D., and Seeth Vivek, M.D. Borenstein is president of the district branch, and Deucher, Viswanathan, and Perlman served as contest judges.

Four of the residents won honors for their work at a meeting where they presented their papers and were judged by a panel of four senior psychiatrists.

  • First Place: Marie Pierre-Louis, M.D., of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, "Physical Aggression in an Inpatient Unit"
  • Second Place: Khatija Paperwalla, M.D., of Zucker Hillside Hospital, "Smoking and Depression"
  • Third Place: Omer Stupac, M.D., of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, "Is Hypomagnesemia Associated With Acute Agitation?"
  • Honorable Mention: Javaid Rashid, M.D., of Elmhurst Hospital Center, "Transient Global Amnesia Following a Transoceanic Flight"

A $1,500 contribution from Queens Psychiatric Society member Seeth Vivek, M.D., and a contribution from APA in the same amount made the contest possible. Vivek was the founder of the competition.
