Nominations Invited For Assembly Profile Of Courage Award

Nominations are now being sought for the APA Assembly’s Profile of Courage Award.

In 1996 the Assembly established a recurring award to recognize APA members who have taken, at risk to their professional and personal status, an ethical stand against intimidating pressure for the good of patient care and in keeping with APA’s Principles of Medical Ethics With Annotations Especially Applicable to Psychiatry.

The award is presented each year at the Assembly’s November meeting. Nominees must meet the following criteria:

• Nominees must be APA members in good standing.

• The deed performed must be on behalf of a patient, patient group, patient care, or an ethical principle of APA.

• The deed must have involved some personal risk (reputation, financial).

• The actions preformed are worthy of consideration and recognition by APA members.

• The actions should serve as an example to members of commendable ethical behavior worthy of emulation.

Those interested in making a nomination recommendation should contact their Assembly representative.

Nominations should include the name of the nominee and a narrative about how the proposed awardee meets the criteria for the award. Recipients are selected by the Assembly Awards Committee and will be invited to attend an award ceremony at the November meeting of the Assembly.

The deadline for nominations is September 1. Nominations should be submitted to Stacy De La O, Assembly staff liaison, by mail to the Department of Association Governance, APA, 1000 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 1825, Arlington, Va. 22209-3901; by fax at (703) 907-7852; or by e-mail at sdelao{at}psych.org.

The Profile of Courage Award was originally funded by contributions made by Assembly members. The fund is now maintained through contributions by APA members and managed by the American Psychiatric Foundation.

More information is available by calling (703) 907-8524. {blacksquare}
