Not a Disease
Laura Day
Craig, Colo.
Although much of the article "High-Tech Tools Reveal Secrets of the
Social Brain" in the July 2 issue was interesting, I must object to your
referring to Asperger's syndrome as a "disease." The image that
the word "disease" brings to mind is of an infected person with
some contagion to be feared. Asperger's syndrome has no contagion and is lived
with by as many as 1 in 200 people.
Those of us who live with this condition are ill at ease only with people
who treat us as something to worry about. People who know that I'm autistic
are either fine with it or fake it well enough that I haven't noticed any
issues from it. People who do not know think of me either as
"quirky" or a bit odd, but likeable. I am not dis-eased by this in
any way. Perhaps the dis-ease is with those who are not autistic.
