SAMHSA Updates Directory of Drug/Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has updated its directory of facilities for treatment of substance abuse problems. Clinicians, administrators, and policymakers in the substance abuse treatment field should find it of interest.

The publication, titled the National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs 2003, is based on the annual National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) conducted by Mathematica Policy Research Inc. for SAMHSA.

The locator includes more than 11,000 addiction treatment programs, including residential treatment centers, outpatient treatment programs, and hospital inpatient programs for drug addiction and alcoholism. Listings include treatment programs for marijuana, cocaine, and heroin addiction, as well as drug and alcohol treatment programs for adolescents and adults. Only those facilities that have been approved by their state substance abuse agency are listed.

The directory is also available online and is searchable by geographic location and by type of treatment service. A locator/mapping feature generates a map showing where the facility is located. The directory identifies facilities that offer services in languages other than English and services for the hearing impaired. Information in the online version is updated monthly.

Free printed copies of the directory may be obtained from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug information by calling (800)-729-6686. The online edition is posted at http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov. {blacksquare}
