Governor to Emphasize Mental Health Care

"Mental health is as important as physical health," he said. "For too long, we have placed mental health care in an inferior position. . . .We have a policy of confusion and duplication that is neither cost-efficient nor effective for our people."

Richardson said that he plans to establish a "single entity to administer behavioral health services." The effort will affect all state agencies that receive state or federal funds for mental health and substance abuse services.

Pamela Hyde, secretary of the state’s Department of Human Services, is chair of a work group designing a "collaborative purchasing approach" for such services. The aim is to "move away from multiple HMOs and multiple state agencies to a single provider under a single administrator."

In related news, the state moved one step closer to implementing psychologist prescribing privileges last month (see page 1).
