Letter to the Editor

Natural Consequences

Chester Pearlman, M.D.

Brookline, Mass.

I was a bit disturbed by the response to the New Mexico psychologist-prescribing law in the April 5 issue.

In an era of alternative medicine, political presentation as protectors of the public by virtue of an M.D. degree risks comparison with Scientologists and the same accusation of economically motivated effort as that leveled at psychologists. As long as psychologists avoid medical complications, our concerns will seem exaggerated, but one malpractice suit would likely bankrupt the affected psychologist and, possibly, the state psychological organization for inadequate supervision/preparation. Since our common-sense position is generally known, I would let nature take its course.
