APA Climbs the Hill Again

Legislative representatives from APA’s district branches came to Washington, D.C., for APA’s semiannual Federal Legislative Institute. Key legislators from both sides of the aisle in Congress discussed their efforts to advance medical privacy, patient protection, and parity, among other issues. The DB representatives met with their state legislators in Congress to present their views and talked informally with many of them at a reception.


Rep. Charles Norwood (R-Ga., center) is the winner of APA’s 2000 Jacob K. Javits Public Service Award for his outstanding legislative efforts to protect all patients from managed care abuses. The award was presented by Jeremy Lazarus, M.D., chair of APA’s Joint Commission on Government Relations, at last month’s Federal Legislative Institute in Washington, D.C. The other winner of the award, Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.), was honored for his advocacy of quality psychiatric care and patient confidentiality in the Veterans Administration.
